One Phat DJ goes solo

without comments

For a long time, this website became dominated with content for the One Phat DJ Podcast. While it was good regular content about fresh funky house music, it was distracting from my main focus in life - the Web and digital media.

The One Phat DJ website has been available for quite a few years now - the first instance was setup way back in 2001 - but has usually been a single page pointing visitors to the podcast and connecting services such as Twitter , Facebook and Last FM.

A few months back, I decided it was time to migrate all One Phat DJ content to a dedicated website to highlight a clear distinction between my two different “guises”.

With the introduction of the Funky House Finesse brand and a regular slot secured on Lifted Radio, I gave myself a weekend to setup a basic website using my favoured CMS WordPress, plugging in all the existing content with minimal effort.

The project is evolving (like most good websites) and is sure to grow over the coming months but, for the time being, if you are more interested in the musical side of my life than the digital media, I suggest you pop on over to the One Phat DJ website, put it in your bookmarks and download the archive of mixes directly from there.

Pink For October

without comments

This website is desperate for a makeover. Since its first incarnation as a “quick fix blog” back in 2005, I’ve always intended to give the website some full attention in an attempt to both prove my worth as a web developer as well as convince the visitors its not just another WordPress installation.

When I remembered we were fast approaching the Pink For October campaign - a month completely devoted to promoting the Breast Cancer Awareness initiative - I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to have another “quick refresh” with an added incentive of delivering a more organised and appealing redesign for November 2008.

I’m not promising huge changes but it will certainly break out of the typical installation which concentrates on the reverse chronological blog content, dismissing the core content to a lower level. There may also be some drastic design decisons, hopefully turning a few heads in the process. Who knows?

In the mean time, you can make do with this garishly pink reskin as an attempt to raise the profile of breast cancer awareness and hope you can either donate some time or money to the cause during October.

You can donate by sending your contributions to one of the many endorsed breast cancer awareness charities or even by simply clicking a few links on The Breast Cancer Awareness Site.

The Breast Cancer Site

I’ll add some new links to this post throughout October to make donating easier.

Footbo

without comments

Everywhere you look online nowadays, there’s a new social network for a certain niche. Whether its for photographers, music lovers, dads, mums or even children - you are bound to find a website that you will feel comfortable with.

So when I got an invite to Footbo - a social network for football fans - my natural reaction was to sign up and see what it was all about.

Footbo - social network for football lovers worldwide

The bullet points on the homepage sum it up quite well…

  • Connect with your friends & other football fans from around the world
  • Receive live scores, fixtures and personalized news
  • Blog about your insights and emotions
  • Predict games and challenge your friends in prediction leagues
  • Read-up on and contribute to your favorite teams and players

The website relies quite heavily on user-generated content. If there are teams or players missing from the system, you just add them. It’s an interesting concept to get around the legal wranglings of the Football DataCo with their rules about publishing football data. Who owns the content? The user or Footbo? It would be interesting to see what happens when the 2008-9 season starts and the scores and fixtures become heavily used.

I also like how there are sections dedicated to leagues and teams, with content feeding in from other news sources and YouTube for videos (although with the current lawsuit between The FA and YouTube, I’m not sure how long that will last).

While the user interface is fairly intuitive, I have found the occasional “feature” that could do with some extra attention in terms of usability. For example, some of the consoles on your user page such as the friend and group requests could have worked better with some AJAX calls rather than entire page loads.

Only time will tell whether Footbo will survive in a social world dominated by MySpace, Facebook and Bebo but I seriously think with some good publicity in the right audiences, Footbo can really appeal to the commercial market of football. Football is one of the most valuable markets in the World with some of the strongest and most passionate communities you shall ever find. If that passion can be transferred to the Internet, and specifically to Footbo, there could be a real opportunity for Footbo to work.

Six Nations KickOff

with one comment

This afternoon, one of the biggest tournaments in the rugby calendar starts - the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Six Nations Rugby tournament.

To mark the occasion, I’ve developed a quick website to allow you to download all the fixtures to your personal organiser - it’s called Six Nations KickOff.

Six Nations KickOff - download or subscribe to all the fixtures

Using a similar technique to my original KickOff project, World Cup KickOff, Six Nations KickOff uses Brian Suda’s useful transformation script X2V to gather up all the calendar Microformats on a page and output them as the generic ICS calendar file format which can be loaded into most personal organisers, such as Microsoft Outlook, Apple iCal or even your PDA or mobile phone.

For added functionality, you can even choose to follow just the one country by clicking on one of the logos at the bottom of the page. If you use the Subscribe functionality rather than download, it will even update automatically with the scores in your calendar.

It’s still only in the early stages of development so if you notice any problems, please let me know and I’ll get on to it as soon as possible.

This is the start of several spin-off KickOff products so keep checking back to my website or even subscribe to the RSS feed for further details.
