Jun ‘08 Warmup

What a long “fortnight” that has been! It seems an age ago since May ‘08 Crescendo was released but that’s the beauty of the new format - occasionally I get a nice, long break between releases.

That’s not to say I’ve been lounging around doing nothing. There have been literally thousands of tracks released to check out in the mean time and I’ve been a busy bee going through them all, sorting out the musical treats to grace your lovely ears.

We kick off the month with quite a laid back mix, featuring some lush tracks from the likes of Bobby D’Ambrosio, Kings of Tomorrow, DJ Roland Clark, Byron Stingily, Shawn Christopher and Pepper Mashay to name but a few. We’re definitely on a Summer vibe with this beauty so I suggest you download the mix, turn those speakers up and enjoy in the sunshine, whether you’re driving with the windows open or kicking back with an ice cold drink in the garden.

Before you do all that though, we need to introduce this month’s guest artist. Gemma Barton of Manchester’s Big Light Studio has delivered a fantastic piece, emphasising the music and Summer feeling, all in to one bright vivid cover for this mix. I think you’ll agree its stunning and sets the scene perfectly. Expect more magic from Gemma in two weeks time…

May ‘08 - Warm Up

The sun is out, everyone is feeling good so what more reason do you need for a healthy dose of fresh and funky house, all mixed up by your resident DJ? Let’s get straight on with it…

With it being Deaf Awareness Week, it seems appropriate to highlight the Don’t Lose The Music campaign. Being a DJ and huge lover of music in general, I am constantly aware of the dangers of losing my hearing, especially after watching the awesome movie “It’s All Gone Pete Tong” where DJ Frankie Wilde (played by the brilliant Paul Kaye) loses his hearing from over-indulging in the Ibiza lifestyle. The intention of Don’t Lose The Music is to raise awareness of playing your music safely, be it in a club atmosphere or on your iPod earphones. One Phat DJ strongly urges you to consider taking care of your ears, as well as bring awareness to those around you. Those of us who can appreciate music should not take it for granted - there are some people who aren’t so lucky. Give those people a thought too…

Mar ‘08 - The Warm Up

As we move out of those cold Winter months and into an (apparently) warmer Spring, focus shifts towards thoughts of bright and sunny holidays, parties, happy people - generally, all things positive. By painting that picture, you should be set for what is coming up this month - the Miami Winter Music Conference - the biggest event of the year in the dance music industry. DJs, producers, artists, promoters, labels and clubbers travel from far and wide to celebrate this landmark event where some of the finest figures in the industry collate to share their latest work, network, make the most of the opportunity to showcase what to expect for the rest of the year and have an amazing time in the process.

It seems only appropriate to celebrate the landmark occasion with the first mix of March 2008 - here is Episode 42, “Mar ‘08 - The Warm Up”.

Supplying the artwork this week is Mr Cole Henley, hailing all the way from bonnie Scotland. I love this clever cross reference with Miami in such a relevant month - the simplicity of the silhouettes keep the image pure and simple, the graphic equalisers subtly making appropriate suggestions.

With that, all that is left to do is download the mix, turn up the speakers (or your headphones) and feel the warmth ooze into your body from the uplifting soulful sounds. You’ll be in Miami before you know it!

Feb’08 - The Warm Up

It’s time to return to the usual programming schedule of the One Phat DJ Podcast, promoting the latest sounds from the funky house scene, all mixed up for you, the listeners, to enjoy with absolutely no interruptions from talking. However, before you get comfortable, I need to announce some brand new alterations to the format…

  • Rather than this being a monthly podcast, I’m changing it to a fortnightly fixture. Some might think I am shooting myself in the foot by creating more work but I want to experiment with two different show formats - the first as a warmup show, the second based on the clubbing scene.
  • The mixes will only be delivered as the original MP3 format. While the iTunes friendly version was full of nice cover art and chapter marks, it was creating a lot of work for little return. This way, the podcast feed isn’t specifically targeted at just the iTunes listeners (especially now the Microsoft Zune is increasingly gaining popularity).
  • The mixes will be released on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month rather than the second Friday of the month. I’m doing this so it should allow you all to download the latest episode in time for the weekend, when you’re most likely to play it.
  • Rather than creating a catchy (and usually appropriate) name for each episode, I have decided to simply go back to basics and name the mix according to the date and style of the music.
  • In line with the new naming conventions, I will be trying to standardise the artwork for each podcast episode, creating a strong and consistent brand for the podcast. While it was great fun choosing and showcasing different pieces of art to suit the name of each episode, it created a lot of extra work for me which used up time and money, time that I can now spend on the actual podcast production instead.

I feel by making these changes, it will give me an opportunity to focus more attention on the core aspect of the podcast, the music, rather than all the administration of the podcast. We’ll see how it pans out anyway. Let me know what you think in the comments below or by emailing me at .
